The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has publicly rebuked Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, accusing him of acting unilaterally and in violation of the party’s constitution.

The BoT, led by Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, condemned Damagum’s decision to cancel the upcoming 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and reinstate Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary—moves they say are unconstitutional and threaten party unity.

According to Wabara, the 99th NEC meeting held on May 27, 2025, had clearly resolved to hold the 100th NEC session on June 30, 2025. “That resolution is binding on all organs and members of the PDP,” he stated, citing Section 31 (3) of the party’s constitution.

Wabara also slammed Damagum’s reversal of the National Working Committee’s (NWC) appointment of Arc. Setonji Koshoedo as Acting National Secretary, calling it a clear overreach of his powers. “Only the NWC or NEC can overturn that decision. Damagum’s action is a gross abuse of office,” he declared.

The BoT issued a strong warning that such unauthorized actions could plunge the PDP into deeper internal turmoil and undermine democratic processes.

“We will not stand by and allow impunity and disregard for our constitution to destroy this party,” Wabara affirmed. He emphasized that the BoT, as the party’s moral compass, is determined to protect due process and institutional integrity.

To address the crisis, the BoT reaffirmed three key positions:

  • The 100th NEC meeting will proceed as scheduled on June 30, 2025.

  • Arc. Setonji Koshoedo remains the Acting National Secretary.

  • All party members must uphold the supremacy of the PDP constitution.

This internal conflict comes at a sensitive time, with the party preparing for its national convention in August. Many party leaders fear that if unresolved, the crisis could fracture the PDP further and weaken its performance in upcoming elections.
