The Kusaug Traditional Council has accused the Mamprusi community in Bawku, under the leadership of Seidu Abagre, of engaging in what it described as “acts of impunity and provocation” that risk undermining ongoing peace efforts in the troubled area.

At an emergency meeting held on Friday, August 29, 2025, the council alleged that Mr. Abagre, whom they described as “illegally enskinned,” was preparing to appoint new chiefs, including a Kpalore Naba and a Nakyi Naba, with more enskinments expected to follow.

These appointments, the council said, were intended to strengthen his authority and support the planned celebration of the Damba Festival in Bawku.

The Council warned that such moves were in clear defiance of the mediation process currently being led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

“The current activities of the Mamprusis in Bawku have the potential of derailing that effort, which Otumfuo has promised to conclude soon,” the statement read.

The Council also criticized what it called the government’s “lack of political will” in dealing with the matter, accusing both past and present administrations of failing to enforce the law against Mr. Abagre.

“Having identified the said Seidu Abagre’s position as illegal, we expected both the former and current government to do the needful: arrest the criminal Seidu Abagre and prosecute him, or at least send him out of Bawku. This they have not done for obvious reasons,” the statement continued.

The Kusaug Traditional Council has since outlined three demands:

  1. The immediate arrest, prosecution, and removal of Seidu Abagre from Bawku.

  2. An end to security escorts for Mamprusi individuals and their goods to and from Bawku.

  3. A halt to the celebration of the Damba Festival in Bawku unless it involves the legitimate Bawku Paramount Chief.

The Council warned that its patience should not be mistaken for weakness, insisting that government and security agencies must act decisively to prevent renewed violence in Bawku.

“Our people cannot continue to endure impunity and lawlessness forever. Appropriate actions must be taken to avoid the looming danger of more bloodshed in Bawku,” the statement, signed by Gumbo Naba Alhaji Mohamudu Assibi Azonko II, concluded.
